How Can I Choose the Right Carpet and Pad?
Carpet padding is just as important as the quality of the carpet. Purchasing a good pad and sacrificing the quality of the carpet is not cost effective in the long term. Carpet backing is made using synthetic latex adhesive. When purchasing carpet, look at the backing of both a low and high grade carpet. The difference is obvious. The backing resembles a net. The tighter the netting, the less carpet stretches and wears as you walk on it. A high quality pad will further prevent stress and stretching of carpet by absorbing the impact and stress of foot traffic.
Bonded, or rebond pad is the most common type of cushion used in residential installation. It comes in a variety of thicknesses from 3/8" up to 5/8". The density of pad is measured in lbs. Padding over ½" can actually cause carpet to wear faster - ½'' 6lb or ½'' 8lb rebond pad is recommended for optimum performance.
